Cash Register

A cash register, also known as a POS (point of sale) cash register is a mechanical or electronic device for monitoring the purchasing activities in a store, calculating, recording, analyzing business and controlling inventory. A POS cash register is a merchandising computer that links the store with the back office to improve tracking of categories so that you can make better purchasing decisions, control inventory effectively and reduce both intentional and accidental shrink.

If you are running a store or business, it is very important to get a proper POS cash register in the beginning. In general, a cash register operates with a bar code scanner, keyboard, cash register drawers and receipt printer.

A bar code scanner in the cash register is used to scan items that the customer has purchased for a speedy checkout. Moreover, the barcode scanner can also be integrated with the inventory control number so that your computer system is updated with the correct inventory after someone has bought an item. There are many different types of barcode scanners available for a POS cash register. These range from simple handheld scanners and simple tabletop scanners to multi-directional laser bar code scanners to meet your needs.

The keyboard in a POS cash register can usually be programmed to incorporate different functions into a single button. The programmable keys can store a macro of any key combination to increase the efficiency of the check out and recording process.

The cash register drawers serve an important role in the system. They store the money that the customers give you. Normally, they are boxes made of metal and can be locked. The cash register drawers will pop open when your receipt gets printed. Additionally, the drawer compartments can be customized for your particular needs.

A receipt printer is inseparable from your POS cash register. Specific receipt printers should be chosen for efficiency in different environments. For example, if you own a busy restaurant or retail store, a thermal receipt printer would be a good choice for its speed and silence in printing. For a restaurant POS cash register, you can also choose a dot matrix printer to use as a remote printer for the kitchen or bar. Thus, when an order is created using your POS cash register, the contents of the order can be sent to the kitchen immediately, ensuring that quick and prompt service will be provided to your customer.

Additionally, portable POS cash registers are also available. These cash registers can either be set up as permanent fixtures in a specific location of your retail establishment or used for temporary sales such as sidewalk our outdoor sales event.

You can learn about the various types of cash registers by researching online. Pay particular attention to all of the additional connections and/or software you need to run the POS cash register. Many modern POS cash registers are quite advanced and the last thing you want is to not have something working right when someone is paying for an item.
