Ceiling Fan

A ceiling fan is a fan that is attached to the ceiling. The ceiling fan was invented in the 1800s, originally powered by water due to the scarcity of electricity. Today’s ceiling fans come packed with features and designs. Many ceiling fans also have a light fixture to serve as lighting as well.

Benefits of a Ceiling Fan
Most people think a ceiling fan is only for cooling but that is only part of the benefit. A ceiling fan’s main purpose is to move and circulate air in a room. In the summer time, the circulation of the air means you don’t need to turn the air conditioning on as often. In the winter time, a ceiling fan can also help you stay warmer. If you have high ceilings, a ceiling fan can help circulate warm air that is trapped above to save you heating bills. Most modern ceiling fans can work in reverse direction. In the winter time, turning the ceiling fan in reverse will suck air up and push the warm air that is trapped above down the walls to warm up the room.

Buying a Ceiling Fan
When buying a ceiling fan, consider the following:
  • Ceiling Fan Size - The first thing you need to do is determine the size of the room you plan to place the ceiling fan. A small room that is under 100 sq feet can benefit from a fan that is 36 inches or smaller. A medium sized room will require a ceiling fan that is between 36 inches and 42 inches. Large rooms that are around 250 sq feet will require ceiling fans 50 inches or greater.

  • Placement of Ceiling Fan - The ceiling fan should be place in the center of the room at least 7 feet above for safety, circulation and aesthetic reasons.

  • Ceiling Fan Motors and Blades - The main part of the ceiling fan is the motor and blades. The ceiling fan motor should be of high quality and can run in both forward and reverse directions. Look also for motors that make low noise and have a good warranty. The ceiling fan blades should be made of wood or acrylic. Look for ceiling fan blades that are sealed to prevent damage from moisture. Other factors to consider are the design of the ceiling fan and blades. Determine if you want a retro, contemporary or modern look. For example, a 3 blade ceiling fan with minimalist design would be considered modern.

  • Ceiling Fan Support - Ceiling fans are heavy in comparison to most lighting fixtures and they also move. Therefore, the proper support of a ceiling fan is very important. Make sure that you ask a qualified professional from your local hardware store for help. In general a ceiling fan needs to be mounted on a special framing member.
As a smarter consumer, do your research and determine the right functions, design and price you desire in a ceiling fan for your home. Some popular ceiling fan brands include Hunter, Casablanca, Hampton Bay and Emerson.
