CPAPCPAP stands for continuous positive airway pressure. It is a machine that is used to treat a disorder called sleep apnea. People who have sleep apnea have difficulty sleeping due to their airways being blocked while they are asleep. A CPAP machine works by blowing pressurized air through the airway at a pressure high enough to keep the throat open. Many people with sleep apneas keep waking up when their airways get blocked and can not get a full nights sleep. As a result they feel tired the entire day and are less productive. For some, surgery may be the only solution. However, the CPAP machine is a viable alternative remedy for many people. The CPAP mechanism consists of a machine and a mask. The CPAP machine is about the size of a shoebox and has an airtube extending from it that connects to a CPAP mask or some type of interface connected to the patient’s nose and/or mouth. The machine continuously blows room air at a pressure high enough to keep the patient’s airway open. The pressure can be set according to the patient’s degree of sleep apnea. The CPAP mask comes in various sizes and is worn either over the nose or nose and mouth. It is very important that the masks fit comfortably as you don’t want air to leak. The CPAP mask also has a tube connecting it to the CPAP machine. Some newer gel masks can form to the shape of the face for comfort. In an effort to create comfort and performance, CPAP masks are continuously going through improvements and updates. Make sure that you research and test it out before you buy. The CPAP mechanism is a medical device and all units must have FDA approval before they can be sold. At the same time, the patient must have a physician’s prescription in order to purchase a CPAP. As with any medical device, make sure that you not only do your research online but also talk to your doctor before making any purchasing decision. |
