Pond LinerA pond can be a beautiful addition to a home garden. A convenient way to construct a pond is to use a pond liner instead of pouring concrete. A pond liner is placed or lined inside the excavated pond hole to prevent water from seeping into the ground. Pond liners can be made from several materials such as butyl rubber, PVC and EPDM.In recent years, EPDM pond liners have become the industry standard. These pond liners are easier to install, strong and flexible. They are also fairly UV resistant and are safe to fish and wildlife. When choosing a pond liner size, make sure that you multiply the depth of the pond by two and add an additional foot or more for the overhang. For example, if the pond is 10 feet wide and 4 feet deep, then the pond liner has to be at least 19 feet wide to accommodate for the depth. When excavating an in-ground pond make sure to clear out sharp rocks to prevent them from puncturing the pond liner. Also, make sure that you don’t pick a spot that is close to trees as the roots will poke into the pond liner. To further protect the pond liner, you can apply a commercial underliner. If you don’t have access to an underliner, you can use some old newspapers, carpets or sand to make the surface smooth for the pond liner. Before you place the pond liner into the pond you can warm it in the sun to make it more flexible. Make sure that you don’t lay the pond liner on your lawn as it will cover the sun and kill the grass. When placing the pond liner in the pond, lay the pond liner on top and don’t drag it. Having two people to do this will help the process. Another type of pond liner is the preformed pond liner. This type of liner is already molded into the shape of the pond and can be placed directly into the excavation hole. Make sure you do your research online to on the types of pond liners to buy. It would be smart to visit a hardware or home and garden store and ask the experts there before you purchase a pond liner. |
