A pool cover is used to cover a swimming pool. Pool covers have a variety of uses including keeping the pool clean, keeping the pool warm and keeping the pool safe. There are pool covers for above ground pools and in-ground pools although the majority of pool cover choices are for in-ground pools.
Although there are different types of pool covers, a particular type of pool cover can be used for various purposes. Described below are a few types of pool covers.
- Solar Pool Cover - A solar pool cover or thermal pool cover is used to keep a swimming pool warm. Most standard pool covers have some thermal heat retaining capability but some are specifically designed to retain heat. It is estimated that you would have to double the size of your pool heater if you don’t use a solar pool cover. Additionally, most solar pool covers also keep the pool for evaporating and clean.
- Winter Pool Cover - A winter pool cover is used to cover a pool when not in use during the winter time. These covers tend to be made of a heavy duty tarp and are secured at the edges of the pool since it is not expected that you remove the pool cover for some time.
- Pool Safety Cover - A pool safety cover is used to keep young children from falling into the pool. Pool safety covers can consist of a mesh or an automatic cover. Please make sure that the pool safety cover meets the ASTM standards which includes being able to withstand the weight of two adults and a child and having the ability to quickly pump out water from top of the cover.
In additional to the various types of pool covers, there is also the method of putting on and removing a pool cover. The most basic form is a tie down cover but this can be tedious to put on and remove. Automatic pool covers that run on a track offers the most convenience. A manual pool cover that is on a track requires a person to crank the cover open and shut and should be used for small pools only.
Keep in mind that the full effect of the pool cover is if it will be used. If spending a bit more money to get a good, safe automatic cover means you will use it, then the money is well spent. Make sure you do your research prior to purchasing a pool cover.
