Before you buy a voltage converter, you should first check your appliance’s power requirements. On the back of your appliance, you will find a label describing the power requirements with a label describing the Wattage (W) or the Amperage (A) of the appliance. Once noted, choose a voltage converter which can handle a higher amount of wattage than your device is rated at. Certain devices may require additional power to start up than what is indicated on the label. This is known as surge. In this case, you should always add an extra 20% to the power requirements of your voltage converter. One of the examples is that of a TV set. To connect a television to a voltage converter you must choose a voltage converter more powerful than what is indicated at the rear of your TV set, because it creates a surge when it is turned on. Usually, you can use several appliances on the same voltage converter as long as the wattage capacity of the voltage converter is not exceeded. Before you buy, make sure that you check the voltage converter will work for your appliance and ask if there is any type of return or exchange policy in case it does not work. Another thing to look for when you are buying a voltage converter is the type of plug. In the US, the prongs are flat while in some other countries, the prongs are round.
