A wig is an artificial hair piece or toupee that can be made of real human hair or synthetic hair. Wigs can be used for cosmetic, practical and ceremonial reasons. Today, there are many choices of wigs available to the consumer.
Wigs are differentiated by the type of cap and the material used for the hair.
Types of Wig Caps
- Standard Cap Wig - A cap is the base of the wig that holds the hair together. A standard wig cap is made of a closed lace layer at the crown. These caps are machine made and are the most durable and economical.
- Capless Wig – A capless wig has vertical lace strips that allow for ventilation. You can also integrate your own hair with the wig by pulling your own hair through the holes for a more natural look.
- Hand Tied Wig – In a hand tied wig, each piece of hair strand is stitched to the cap by hand. This type of wig often offers a monofilament top as well.
- Monofilament Cap Wig – A monofilament cap wig is made of thin nylon or polyester material that allows the scalp to show through. The hair is hand tied into the monofilament fabric giving the illusion that hair is growing out of the scalp. This type of wig is the most natural looking and is also the most expensive.
Types of Wig Hairs
- Synthetic Hair Wig - Most wigs are made of synthetic hair. Synthetic hair is typically made of modacrylic and polyester. Some higher quality synthetic hair wigs look very similar to human hair. Synthetic hair wigs are easy to take care of, durable and less expensive than human hair wigs. They also offer more variety of styles.
- Human Hair Wig - A human hair wig is made from real human hairs. These types of wigs are the most natural looking for obvious reasons. However, they are more expensive and more difficult to take care of. You have to take care of human hair wigs just like real hair.
